Since ancient times , tales of spirits who return from the afterlife to terrorize he living have figured prominently in the folklore of many cultures around the world.
We've got spirits, yes we do.
We know the United States as the land of spacious skies and amber waves of grain, but it also happens to be the land of a million ghost stories. Take a coast-to-coast tour of the most haunted places in America, where lingering spirits roam through the halls of hotels, abandoned insane asylums, Broadway theaters, and even a city zoo. And if ghosts aren't your go-to travel companions, fear not—these sites offer enough culture, history, and beautiful scenery and architecture to keep you firmly planted in this realm.
The English word ghost, meaning the spirit of a person who has died, is derived from a Germanic word, though the concept--a dead person's soul or spirit returning to the world of the living --has existed for millennia and appears in cultures all around the globe.
Amazingly, despite geographic distance and religous differences, ghost lore in most cultures is quite similar: Most beliefs center around ghosts haunting the living in order to settle the deceased's unfinished business or to exact vengeance .
In addition, in many cultures, the failure to properly bury a corpse risks angering the dead person's spirit, who might return to haunt the living .
These beliefs have contributed to a rich literary tradition of ghost stories that has heavily influenced contemporary American ideas about the paranormal.
People living in ancient Mesopotamia, a region in the Middle East consisting of parts of modern day Kuwait, Turkey, Iraq and Syria and one of the earliest "cradles of civilization," believed that, upon death, humans moved on to Irkalla, an underground cavern where the spirits of the dead existed for all eternity. These spirits, known as gidim, expected their living relatives to periodically offer sacrifices of food and drink to ease their suffering (there was nothing to eat or drink in Irkalla but dust); living people who failed to make these offerings risked angering the gidim, who might then retaliate by cursing the living with illness or bad luck.
Ancient Egyptians believed that human souls were made up of five elements, two of which -- ba (personality, and symbolized by a bird with a human head) and ka (spirit or life force)--joined at the time of death to become ahk, a spirit that was sometimes granted the ability to temporarily assume physical form and return to the world of he living. Usually, the ahk came back to avenge some wrong committed against the deceased person, such as failure to perform he proper burial rites, and the haunted person would have to beg the ahk for forgiveness.
The ancient Greeks believed that wen someone died his or her soul (which mirrored the person's physical appearance at the time of death) emerged from the body and began the journey to the underworld. Like Irkalla, their realm of the afterlife (sometimes called Hades, after the Greek god of the dead) was usually depicted as a dark underground place. Here, the souls of the dead simply existed for eternity, though in rare instances the living could communicate with the souls of the dead.
For instance, in book 23 of the epic poem The Iliad, Achilles is visited in a dream by the ghost of his former comrade-in-arms Patroclus, who asks the hero to burn his body and bury his bones so he can journey to the realm of the dead. A similar event takes place in book 11 of Homer's Odyssey. Here, the hero Odysseus is able to summon the spirits of the dead by offering sacrifices. These spirits are able to see the future , though their restlessness (like those of the ahk), is usually related to improper burial. Odysseus' former comrade Elpenor begs the hero to ensure that his body is properly buried. In the 5th-century-BCE play The Eumenides (the third installment of the Oresteia trilogy), the ghost of Queen Clytemnestra seeks revenge on her son, who killed her in retaliation for her murder of his father, Agamemnon.
The Romans adopted many of the Greek's beliefs about death, the underworld and spirits. Out of these beliefs emerged several notable ghost stories. For instance, 1st-Century historian Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus (who was born in Greece and later became a Roman citizen), known simply as Plutarch, recounted the story of the haunted bath in his hometown of Chaeronea. According to Plutarch, some 200 years before, a Roman captain had fallen in love with a young man named Damon, who did not reciprocate the captain's feelings.
In a jealous rage, the captain hit Damon, who responded by murdering the captain in a few nights later. Fearing Roman retribution, the local townspeople sentenced Damon to death. Damon, enraged by the sentence, responded by murdering the magistrates. When news of Damon's latest murders spread throughout Chaeronea, the townspeople set upon the young man in a local bathhouse and killed him. Therefore according to Plutarch, "there appeared spirits...in that place, and there were heard groanings and sighings."
In the 2nd century, a Greek writer named Phlegon of Tralles, who was living in Rome and served on Roman Emperor Hadrian's staff, compiled the Book of Marvels, which contains several bizarre , grotesque and paranormal events. The Book of Marvels has an entire section dedicated to ghosts, including several instances of dead people returning to life. The best known of these stories is that of Philinnion, a Macedonian maiden whose ghost conducts an affair with Machates, a young man staying in her parents' house. Phlegon also relates the tale of Bouplagos, a Syrian cavalry commander killed in battle with the Romans. When, following the battle, Roman soldiers looted their enemies' corpses, Bouplagos' returned to life and ordered them not to disturb the dead. Phlegon even included an appendix at the end of the Book of Marvels, listing people who had allegedly died and returned to life.
Pliny the Younger, a 1st-century Roman author and magistrate, wrote a letter to Senator Lucius Licinius Sura, in which recounted several ghost stories, including that of Athenodorus, who rented a house in Athens that was allegedly haunted.
On Athenodorus' first night in the house, a ghost appeared to him and led him outside to the garden.
The following day, Athenodorus had the garden dug up and found a skeleton, which he ordered properly buried, after which the ghost never appeared again.
Ancient belief in ghosts was not limited to Western cultures; some of the oldest known stories in China involved the spirits of dead people returning to haunt the living. As with the Egyptians and Greeks, many ancient Asian cultures believed that failing to properly bury a corpse risked the deceased's spirit returning to haunt the living. Buddhism, which emerged in India between the 5th and 4th centuries BCE and spread through eastern Asia, reinforced the belief in ghosts in China. In the ancient Sanskrit language a preta--usually translated as "hungry ghost"-is the spirit of a dead person who has not been reincarnated, usually due to excessive materialism in life. Pretas have an insatiable hunger for unclean or grotesque objects (such as feces or blood) and exist in the same physical space as he living.
Though pretas can be nuisances to the living , more often they are pitied, and many Asian societies have annual hungry ghost festivals, usually involving the sacrifice of objects to satisfy the pretas' hunger.
Belief in ghosts was also common in Mesoamerican cultures. The Aztecs, who inhabited modern-day Mexico, believed that , upon death, human souls went to one of three places: Mictlan, an underground realm ruled by the god Mictlantecuhtli, whose worship involved human sacrifice; Tlalocan, a paradise of unending springtime for the souls of those who died by drowning or being struck by lightning; and the sun. Particularly feared were the spirits of women who had died in childbirth; the Aztecs believed these periodically reappeared to kidnap children.
The diverse native cultures of North America also believed in ghosts. For instance, the Native Americans living in the southeastern part of the continent seemed to have believed that the souls of both humans and animals could return from the dead to seek vengeance on the living for failing to follow proper burial rituals. The Navajo of southwestern North America believed that the spirits of the dead appeared as coyotes or mice or as dark shadows, while the nearby Apache believed that ghosts appeared to be living in dreams or as shadowy black objects. The Cree, who inhabited the Great Lakes region, believed that failure to follow proper burial rituals might result in the deceased's ghost , called tcipayak, haunting the community.
Ghosts figure prominently in the Judeo-Christian religious tradition as well. There are several mentions of necromancy (the practice of communicating with the dead) in the Old Testament. For instance, Deuteronomy 18:9--13 lists necromancy among several "abominable practices" prohibited by God. This did not stop King Saul from having the witch of Endor conjure the prophet Samuel's ghost, who accurately forecast that the Hebrews would lose an upcoming battle with the Philistines (1 Samuel 28:7--20).
The book of Daniel contains the story of Belshazzar, son of the Neo- Babylonian King Nabonidus, whose empire included ancient Israel.
According to Daniel, Belshazzar gave a grand feast, during which he used the Israelites' sacred vessels to serve his guests wine. In response, a spectral hand appeared that wrote a message rebuking Belshazzar for profaning the Israelites' sacred vessels and telling him the days of his kingdom were numbered (Daniel 5:1--31). The Jewish belief in ghosts continued to some extent into the New Testament. For instance, after walking on water, Jesus' apostles believed him to be a ghost, which he denies (Matthew 14:22--33 and Mark 6:49). When Jesus appears to them following his crucifixion, the apostles again believe him to be a ghost, which he again denies (Luke 24:36--38).
As Christianity spread across the Roman Empire, it absorbed and adapted many of the existing traditions related to ghosts.
A good example of this is the Celtic tradition of Samhain. The Celts, who occupied modern-day Ireland, England, France, Belgium and migrated as far as Turkey, celebrated their new year in the fall, around what is now November, Celtic tradition held that the day before the celebration, the boundary between realms of the living and the dead blurred, allowing the ghosts to return to Earth.
In addition to causing mischief, the ghosts made it possible for Druids, as the Celts' religious leaders were known , to make prophecies about the following years' harvest. To assist the Druids in their prophesying and hopefully ensure a good harvest, the Celts lit huge bonfires that they used to burn sacrifices to their gods.
During these celebrations, the Celts sometimes wore costumes and placed food outside their homes for the wandering ghosts.
Over the next couple centuries , popes adapted the tradition and November 1 became All Saints' Day. Because hallow was another word for saint, October 31 became "All Hallows' Eve." That eventually became "Halloween,", which to this day incorporates many of the Celts' traditions.
Within ghost hunting and parapsychology, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are sounds found on electronic recordings that are interpreted as spirit voices that have been either unintentionally recorded or intentionally requested and recorded. Parapsychologist Konstantīns Raudive, who popularized the idea in the 1970s, described EVP as typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase.
Enthusiasts consider EVP to be a form of paranormal phenomenon often found in recordings with static or other background noise. Many scientists regard EVP as a form of auditory pareidolia (interpreting random sounds as voices in one's own language) and a pseudoscience promulgated by popular culture. Prosaic explanations for EVP include apophenia (perceiving patterns in random information), equipment artifacts, and hoaxes.
As the Spiritualist religious movement became prominent in the 1840s–1940s with a distinguishing belief that the spirits of the dead can be contacted by mediums, new technologies of the era including photography were employed by spiritualists in an effort to demonstrate contact with a spirit world. So popular were such ideas that Thomas Edison was asked in an interview with Scientific American to comment on the possibility of using his inventions to communicate with spirits. He replied that if the spirits were only capable of subtle influences, a sensitive recording device would provide a better chance of spirit communication than the table tipping and ouija boards mediums employed at the time. However, there is no indication that Edison ever designed or constructed a device for such a purpose. As sound recording became widespread, mediums explored using this technology to demonstrate communication with the dead as well. Spiritualism declined in the latter part of the 20th century, but attempts to use portable recording devices and modern digital technologies to communicate with spirits continued.:352–381
American photographer Attila von Szalay was among the first to try recording what he believed to be voices of the dead as a way to augment his investigations in photographing ghosts. He began his attempts in 1941 using a 78 rpm record, but it wasn't until 1956 — after switching to a reel-to-reel tape recorder — that he believed he was successful. Working with Raymond Bayless, von Szalay conducted a number of recording sessions with a custom-made apparatus, consisting of a microphone in an insulated cabinet connected to an external recording device and speaker. Szalay reported finding many sounds on the tape that could not be heard on the speaker at the time of recording, some of which were recorded when there was no one in the cabinet. He believed these sounds to be the voices of discarnate spirits. Among the first recordings believed to be spirit voices were such messages as "This is G!", "Hot dog, Art!", and "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all". Von Szalay and Raymond Bayless' work was published by the Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research in 1959.Bayless later went on to co-author the 1979 book, Phone Calls From the Dead.
In 1959, Swedish painter and film producer Friedrich Jürgenson was recording bird songs. Upon playing the tape later, he heard what he interpreted to be his dead father's voice and then the spirit of his deceased wife calling his name.He went on to make several more recordings, including one that he said contained a message from his late mother.
Konstantin Raudive, a Latvian psychologist who had taught at the Uppsala University, Sweden and who had worked in conjunction with Jürgenson, made over 100,000 recordings which he described as being communications with discarnate people. Some of these recordings were conducted in an RF-screened laboratory and contained words Raudive said were identifiable.:352–381 In an attempt to confirm the content of his collection of recordings, Raudive invited listeners to hear and interpret them.:353, 496 He believed that the clarity of the voices heard in his recordings implied that they could not be readily explained by normal means.:352–381 Raudive published his first book, Breakthrough: An Amazing Experiment in Electronic Communication with the Dead in 1968 and it was translated into English in 1971.
In 1980, William O'Neil constructed an electronic audio device called "The Spiricom". O'Neil claimed the device was built to specifications which he received psychically from George Mueller, a scientist who had died six years previously.:352–381At a Washington, DC press conference on April 6, 1982, O'Neil stated that he was able to hold two-way conversations with spirits through the Spiricom device, and provided the design specifications to researchers for free. However, nobody is known to have replicated the results O'Neil claimed using his own Spiricom devices.O'Neil's partner, retired industrialist George Meek, attributed O'Neil's success, and the inability of others to replicate it, to O'Neil's mediumistic abilities forming part of the loop that made the system work. In 2020 Kenny Biddle wrote a comprehensive article explaining the origins of the Spiricom as developed by O'Neil and Meek. He was prompted to do so by the re-emergence of the device on the television series Ghosthunters. He comprehensively debunked the "science" behind the device in both the original development and the Ghosthunters episode.
Another electronic device specifically constructed in an attempt to capture EVP is "Frank's Box" or the "Ghost Box", created in 2002 by EVP enthusiast Frank Sumption for supposed real-time communication with the dead. Sumption claims he received his design instructions from the spirit world. The device is described as a combination white noise generator and AM radio receiver modified to sweep back and forth through the AM band selecting split-second snippets of sound. Critics of the device say its effect is subjective and incapable of being replicated, and since it relies on radio noise, any meaningful response a user gets is purely coincidental, or simply the result of pareidolia. Paranormal researcher Ben Radford writes that Frank's Box is a "modern version of the Ouija board... also known as the 'broken radio'".
In 1982, Sarah Estep founded the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena (AA-EVP) in Severna Park, Maryland, a nonprofit organization with the purpose of increasing awareness of EVP, and of teaching standardized methods for capturing it. Estep began her exploration of EVP in 1976, and says she has made hundreds of recordings of messages from deceased friends, relatives, and extraterrestrials whom she speculated originated from other planets or dimensions.
The term Instrumental Trans-Communication (ITC) was coined by Ernst Senkowski in the 1970s to refer more generally to communication through any sort of electronic device such as tape recorders, fax machines, television sets or computers between spirits or other discarnate entities and the living. One particularly famous claimed incidence of ITC occurred when the image of EVP enthusiast Friedrich Jürgenson (whose funeral was held that day) was said to have appeared on a television in the home of a colleague, which had been purposefully tuned to a vacant channel. ITC enthusiasts also look at the TV and video camera feedback loop of the Droste effect.
In 1979, parapsychologist D. Scott Rogo described an alleged paranormal phenomenon in which people report that they receive simple, brief, and usually single-occurrence telephone calls from spirits of deceased relatives, friends, or strangers. Rosemary Guiley has written "within the parapsychology establishment, Rogo was often faulted for poor scholarship, which, critics said, led to erroneous conclusions."
In 1995, the parapsychologist David Fontana proposed in an article that poltergeists could haunt tape recorders. He speculated that this may have happened to the parapsychologist Maurice Grosse who investigated the Enfield Poltergeist case. However, Tom Flynn a media expert for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry examined Fontana's article and suggested an entirely naturalistic explanation for the phenomena. According to the skeptical investigator Joe Nickell "Occasionally, especially with older tape and under humid conditions, as the tape travels it can adhere to one of the guide posts. When this happens on a deck where both supply and take-up spindles are powered, the tape continues to feed, creating a fold. It was such a loop of tape, Flynn theorizes, that threaded its way amid the works of Grosse's recorder."
In 1997, Imants Barušs, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Western Ontario, conducted a series of experiments using the methods of EVP investigator Konstantin Raudive, and the work of "instrumental transcommunication researcher" Mark Macy, as a guide. A radio was tuned to an empty frequency, and over 81 sessions a total of 60 hours and 11 minutes of recordings were collected. During recordings, a person either sat in silence or attempted to make verbal contact with potential sources of EVP. Barušs stated that he did record several events that sounded like voices, but they were too few and too random to represent viable data and too open to interpretation to be described definitively as EVP. He concluded: "While we did replicate EVP in the weak sense of finding voices on audio tapes, none of the phenomena found in our study was clearly anomalous, let alone attributable to discarnate beings. Hence we have failed to replicate EVP in the strong sense." The findings were published in the Journal of Scientific Exploration in 2001, and include a literature review.
In 2005, the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research published a report by paranormal investigator Alexander MacRae. MacRae conducted recording sessions using a device of his own design that generated EVP. In an attempt to demonstrate that different individuals would interpret EVP in the recordings the same way, MacRae asked seven people to compare some selections to a list of five phrases he provided, and to choose the best match. MacRae said the results of the listening panels indicated that the selections were of paranormal origin.
Portable digital voice recorders are currently the technology of choice for some EVP investigators. Since some of these devices are very susceptible to Radio Frequency (RF) contamination, EVP enthusiasts sometimes try to record EVP in RF- and sound-screened rooms.
Some EVP enthusiasts describe hearing the words in EVP as an ability, much like learning a new language. Skeptics suggest that the claimed instances may be misinterpretations of natural phenomena, inadvertent influence of the electronic equipment by researchers, or deliberate influencing of the researchers and the equipment by third parties. EVP and ITC are seldom researched within the scientific community, so most research in the field is carried out by amateur researchers who lack training and resources to conduct scientific research, and who are motivated by subjective notions.
Paranormal claims for the origin of EVP include living humans imprinting thoughts directly on an electronic medium through psychokinesis and communication by discarnate entities such as spirits, nature energies, beings from other dimensions, or extraterrestrials. Paranormal explanations for EVP generally assume production of EVP by a communicating intelligence through means other than the typical functioning of communication technologies. Natural explanations for reported instances of EVP tend to dispute this assumption explicitly and provide explanations which do not require novel mechanisms that are not based on recognized scientific phenomena.
One study, by psychologist Imants Barušs, was unable to replicate suggested paranormal origins for EVP recorded under controlled conditions. Brian Regal in Pseudoscience: A Critical Encyclopedia (2009) has written "A case can be made for the idea that many EVPs are artifacts of the recording process itself with which the operators are unfamiliar. The majority of EVPs have alternative, nonspiritual sources; anomalous ones have no clear proof they are of spiritual origin."
There are a number of simple scientific explanations that can account for why some listeners to the static on audio devices may believe they hear voices, including radio interference and the tendency of the human brain to recognize patterns in random stimuli. Some recordings may be hoaxes created by frauds or pranksters.
Auditory pareidolia is a situation created when the brain incorrectly interprets random patterns as being familiar patterns. In the case of EVP it could result in an observer interpreting random noise on an audio recording as being the familiar sound of a human voice. The propensity for an apparent voice heard in white noise recordings to be in a language understood well by those researching it, rather than in an unfamiliar language, has been cited as evidence of this, and a broad class of phenomena referred to by author Joe Banks as Rorschach Audio has been described as a global explanation for all manifestations of EVP.
In a 2019 investigation of a supposed haunted painting in a West Virginia museum, paranormal researcher Kenny Biddle investigated the claims made by the museum owner and ghost hunters that an EVP recording clearly saying the woman's name, "Annie", is really the voice of the woman in the portrait. The name Annie is written on the back of the portrait, which primes anyone listening for the name, to know what name to listen for. The EVP was created using a Radio Shack radio "modified to allow it to continually scan through the available AM or FM frequencies without muting the sound." Regarding a general question by the ghost hunter "What is your name?", Biddle writes, "I can guarantee sooner or later you'll hear something that sounds like a name, and there is a good chance of being a name, because you're listening to radio broadcasts, news reports, commercials, and so on—which often include names." Biddle lists words such as "company, anything, anyone, mahogany, many, or even any." as words that can be commonly heard while listening to the radio. The phrase '"...and he..."' would also sound like "Annie" to anyone primed to listen for the name Annie.
Skeptics such as David Federlein, Chris French, Terence Hines and Michael Shermer say that EVP are usually recorded by raising the "noise floor" – the electrical noise created by all electrical devices – in order to create white noise. When this noise is filtered, it can be made to produce noises which sound like speech. Federlein says that this is no different from using a wah pedal on a guitar, which is a focused sweep filter which moves around the spectrum and creates open vowel sounds. This, according to Federlein, sounds exactly like some EVP. This, in combination with such things as cross modulation of radio stations or faulty ground loops can cause the impression of paranormal voices. The human brain evolved to recognize patterns, and if a person listens to enough noise the brain will detect words, even when there is no intelligent source for them. Expectation also plays an important part in making people believe they are hearing voices in random noise.
Apophenia is related to, but distinct from pareidolia. Apophenia is defined as "the spontaneous finding of connections or meaning in things which are random, unconnected or meaningless", and has been put forward as a possible explanation.According to the psychologist James Alcock what people hear in EVP recordings can best be explained by apophenia, cross-modulation or expectation and wishful thinking. Alcock concluded "Electronic Voice Phenomena are the products of hope and expectation; the claims wither away under the light of scientific scrutiny."
Interference, for example, is seen in EVP recordings, especially those recorded on devices which contain RLC circuitry. These cases represent radio signals of voices or other sounds from broadcast sources. Interference from CB Radio transmissions and wireless baby monitors, or anomalies generated through cross modulation from other electronic devices, are all documented phenomena. It is even possible for circuits to resonate without any internal power source by means of radio reception.
Capture errors are anomalies created by the method used to capture audio signals, such as noise generated through the over-amplification of a signal at the point of recording.
Artifacts created during attempts to boost the clarity of an existing recording might explain some EVP. Methods include re-sampling, frequency isolation, and noise reduction or enhancement, which can cause recordings to take on qualities significantly different from those that were present in the original recording.
The very first EVP recordings may have originated from the use of tape recording equipment with poorly aligned erasure and recording heads, resulting in the incomplete erasure of previous audio recordings on the tape. This could allow a small percentage of previous content to be superimposed or mixed into a new 'silent' recording.
For all radio transmissions above 30 MHz (which are not reflected by the ionosphere) there is a possibility of meteor reflection of the radio signal.Meteors leave a trail of ionised particles and electrons as they pass through the upper atmosphere (a process called ablation) which reflect transmission radio waves which would usually flow into space. These reflected waves are from transmitters which are below the horizon of the received meteor reflection. In Europe this means the brief scattered wave may carry a foreign voice which can interfere with radio receivers. Meteor reflected radio waves last between 0.05 seconds and 1 second, depending on the size of the meteor.
There are a number of organizations dedicated to studying EVP and instrumental transcommunication, or which otherwise express interest in the subject. Individuals within these organizations may participate in investigations, author books or journal articles, deliver presentations, and hold conferences where they share experiences. In addition organizations exist which dispute the validity of the phenomena on scientific grounds.
The Association TransCommunication (ATransC), formerly the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena (AA-EVP), and the International Ghost Hunters Society conduct ongoing investigations of EVP and ITC including collecting examples of purported EVP available over the internet. The Rorschach Audio Project, initiated by sound artist Joe Banks, which presents EVP as a product of radio interference combined with auditory pareidolia and the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Biopsychocybernetics Research, a non-profit organization dedicated to studying anomalous phenomena related to neurophysiological conditions.According to the AA-EVP it is "the only organized group of researchers we know of specializing in the study of ITC"
Parapsychologists and Spiritualists have an ongoing interest in EVP.Many Spiritualists experiment with a variety of techniques for spirit communication which they believe provide evidence of the continuation of life. According to the National Spiritualist Association of Churches, "An important modern day development in mediumship is spirit communications via an electronic device. This is most commonly known as Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)".An informal survey by the organization's Department Of Phenomenal Evidence cites that 1/3 of churches conduct sessions in which participants seek to communicate with spirit entities using EVP.
The James Randi Educational Foundation offers a million dollars for proof that any phenomena, including EVP, are caused paranormally.
As of July 2015, an extended investigation on the demography of United States paranormal groups operating in the field of the electronic voice phenomenon has highlighted an overrepresentation of white participants, raised in the Roman Catholic Church (which is only the 21% of the U.S. population), mainly with some post-secondary education. Research denied that paranormal beliefs are more common among women or "less socially integrated individuals."
The concept of EVP has influenced popular culture. It is popular as an entertaining pursuit, as in ghost hunting, and as a means of dealing with grief. It has influenced literature, radio, film, television, and music.
Investigation of EVP is the subject of hundreds of regional and national groups and Internet message boards. Paranormal investigator John Zaffis claims, "There's been a boom in ghost hunting ever since the Internet took off." Investigators, equipped with electronic gear—like EMF meters, video cameras, and audio recorders—scour reportedly haunted venues, trying to uncover visual and audio evidence of ghosts. Many use portable recording devices in an attempt to capture EVP
Paranormal events are purported phenomena described in popular culture, folk, and other non-scientific bodies of knowledge, whose existence within these contexts is described as beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. Notable paranormal beliefs include those that pertain to extrasensory perception (for example, telepathy), spiritualism and the pseudosciences of ghost hunting, cryptozoology, and ufology.
Proposals regarding the paranormal are different from scientific hypotheses or speculations extrapolated from scientific evidence because scientific ideas are grounded in empirical observations and experimental data gained through the scientific method. In contrast, those who argue for the existence of the paranormal explicitly do not base their arguments on empirical evidence but rather on anecdote, testimony, and suspicion. The standard scientific models give the explanation that what appears to be paranormal phenomena is usually a misinterpretation, misunderstanding, or anomalous variation of natural phenomena.
On the classification of paranormal subjects, Terence Hines in his book Pseudoscience and the Paranormal (2003) wrote:
The paranormal can best be thought of as a subset of pseudoscience. What sets the paranormal apart from other pseudosciences is a reliance on explanations for alleged phenomena that are well outside the bounds of established science. Thus, paranormal phenomena include extrasensory perception (ESP), telekinesis, ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, reincarnation, faith healing, human auras, and so forth. The explanations for these allied phenomena are phrased in vague terms of "psychic forces", "human energy fields", and so on. This is in contrast to many pseudoscientific explanations for other nonparanormal phenomena, which, although very bad science, are still couched in acceptable scientific terms
Ghost hunting is the investigation of locations that are reportedly haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost-hunting team will attempt to collect evidence supporting the existence of paranormal activity.
In traditional ghostlore, and fiction featuring ghosts, a ghost is a manifestation of the spirit or soul of a person. Alternative theories expand on that idea and include belief in the ghosts of deceased animals. Sometimes the term "ghost" is used synonymously with any spirit or demon;[however, in popular usage the term typically refers to the spirit of a deceased person.
Approaching the paranormal from a research perspective is often difficult because of the lack of acceptable physical evidence from most of the purported phenomena. By definition, the paranormal does not conform to conventional expectations of nature. Therefore, a phenomenon cannot be confirmed as paranormal using the scientific method because, if it could be, it would no longer fit the definition. (However, confirmation would result in the phenomenon being reclassified as part of science.) Despite this problem, studies on the paranormal are periodically conducted by researchers from various disciplines. Some researchers simply study the beliefs in the paranormal regardless of whether the phenomena are considered to objectively exist. This section deals with various approaches to the paranormal: anecdotal, experimental, and participant-observer approaches and the skeptical investigation approach.
Experimental investigation of the paranormal has been conducted by parapsychologists. J. B. Rhine popularized the now famous methodology of using card-guessing and dice-rolling experiments in a laboratory in the hopes of finding evidence of extrasensory perception. However, it was revealed that Rhine's experiments contained methodological flaws and procedural errors.
In 1957, the Parapsychological Association was formed as the preeminent society for parapsychologists. In 1969, they became affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Criticisms of the field were focused in the creation (in 1976) of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (now called the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry) and its periodical, the Skeptical Inquirer.Eventually, more mainstream scientists became critical of parapsychology as an endeavor, and statements by the National Academies of Science and the National Science Foundation cast a pall on the claims of evidence for parapsychology. Today, many cite parapsychology as an example of a pseudoscience. Parapsychology has been criticized for continuing investigation despite being unable to provide convincing evidence for the existence of any psychic phenomena after more than a century of research.
By the 2000s, the status of paranormal research in the United States had greatly declined from its height in the 1970s, with the majority of work being privately funded and only a small amount of research being carried out in university laboratories. In 2007, Britain had a number of privately funded laboratories in university psychology departments.Publication remained limited to a small number of niche journals, and to date there have been no experimental results that have gained wide acceptance in the scientific community as valid evidence of the paranormal.
While parapsychologists look for quantitative evidence of the paranormal in laboratories, a great number of people immerse themselves in qualitative research through participant-observer approaches to the paranormal. Participant-observer methodologies have overlaps with other essentially qualitative approaches, including phenomenological research that seeks largely to describe subjects as they are experienced, rather than to explain them.
Participant observation suggests that by immersing oneself in the subject that is being studied, a researcher is presumed to gain understanding of the subject. Criticisms of participant observation as a data-gathering technique are similar to criticisms of other approaches to the paranormal, but also include an increased threat to the scientific objectivity of the researcher, unsystematic gathering of data, reliance on subjective measurement, and possible observer effects (i.e. observation may distort the observed behavior). Specific data-gathering methods, such as recording EMF (electromagnetic field) readings at haunted locations, have their own criticisms beyond those attributed to the participant-observer approach itself.
Participant observation, as an approach to the paranormal, has gained increased visibility and popularity through reality television programs like Ghost Hunters, and the formation of independent ghost hunting groups that advocate immersive research at alleged paranormal locations. One popular website for ghost hunting enthusiasts lists over 300 of these organizations throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.
Ghost hunting is the process of investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost-hunting team will attempt to collect evidence supporting the existence of paranormal activity. Ghost hunters use a variety of electronic devices, including EMF meters, digital thermometers, both handheld and static digital video cameras, including thermographic and night vision cameras, Night vision goggles, as well as digital audio recorders. Other more traditional techniques are also used, such as conducting interviews and researching the history of allegedly haunted sites. Ghost hunters may also refer to themselves as "paranormal investigators."
Ghost hunting has been heavily criticized for its dismissal of the scientific method. No scientific study has ever been able to confirm the existence of ghosts. The practice is considered a pseudoscience by the vast majority of educators, academics, science writers, and skeptics. Science historian Brian Regal described ghost hunting as "an unorganized exercise in futility".
History
Paranormal research dates back to the 18th century, with organisations such as the Society for Psychical Research investigating spiritual matters. Psychic researcher Harry Price published his Confessions of a Ghost-Hunter in 1936.
Ghost hunting was popularised in the 2000s by television series such as Most Haunted and Ghost Hunters, combined with the increasing availability of high-tech equipment. The Atlantic Paranormal Society reported a doubling in their membership in the late 2000s, attributing this to the television programs. Despite its lack of acceptance in academic circles, the popularity of ghost-hunting reality TV shows has influenced a number of individuals to take up the pursuit.
Small businesses offering ghost-hunting equipment and paranormal investigation services increased in the early 2000s. Many offer electromagnetic field (EMF) meters, infrared motion sensors and devices billed as "ghost detectors". The paranormal boom is such that some small ghost-hunting related businesses are enjoying increased profits through podcast and web site advertising, books, DVDs, videos and other commercial enterprises.
One ghost-hunting group called "A Midwest Haunting" based in Macomb, Illinois, reported that the number of people taking its tours had tripled, jumping from about 600 in 2006 to 1,800 in 2008. Others, such as Marie Cuff of "Idaho Spirit Seekers" pointed to increased traffic on their websites and message boards as an indication that ghost hunting was becoming more accepted. Participants say that ghost hunting allows them to enjoy the friendship of like-minded people and actively pursue their interest in the paranormal. According to Jim Willis of "Ghosts of Ohio", his group's membership had doubled, growing to 30 members since it was founded in 1999 and includes both true believers and total skeptics. Willis says his group is "looking for answers, one way or another" and that skepticism is a prerequisite for those who desire to be "taken seriously in this field."
Author John Potts says that the present day pursuit of "amateur ghost hunting" can be traced back to the Spiritualist era and early organizations founded to investigate paranormal phenomena, like London's The Ghost Club and the Society for Psychical Research, but that modern investigations are unrelated to academic parapsychology. Potts writes that modern ghost hunting groups ignore the scientific method and instead follow a form of "techno-mysticism".
The popularity of ghost hunting has led to some injuries. Unaware that a "spooky home" in Worthington, Ohio was occupied, a group of teenagers stepped on the edge of the property to explore. The homeowner fired on the teenagers' automobile as they were leaving, seriously injuring one.. A woman hunting for ghosts was killed in a fall from a University of Toronto building.
An offshoot of ghost hunting is the commercial ghost tour conducted by a local guide or tour operator who is often a member of a local ghost-hunting or paranormal investigation group. Since both the tour operators and owners of the reportedly haunted properties share profits of such enterprises (admissions typically range between $50 and $100 per person), some believe the claims of hauntings are exaggerated or fabricated in order to increase attendance.
The city of Savannah, Georgia is said to be the American city with the most ghost tours, having more than 31 as of 2003.
A handheld infrared thermometer of the type used by some ghost hunters
Ghost hunters use a variety of techniques and tools to investigate alleged paranormal activity. While there is no universal acceptance among ghost hunters of the following methodologies, a number of these are commonly used by ghost hunting groups.
According to ghost hunters, a cold spot is an area of localized coldness or a sudden decrease in ambient temperature. Many ghost hunters use digital thermometers or heat sensing devices to measure such temperature changes. Believers claim that cold spots are an indicator of paranormal or spirit activity in the area; however, there are many natural explanations for rapid temperature variations within structures, and there is no scientifically confirmed evidence that spirit entities exist or can affect air temperatures.
Some ghost hunters claim that circular artifacts appearing in photographs are spirits of the dead or other paranormal phenomena; however, such visual artifacts are a result of flash photography illuminating a mote of dust or other particle, and are especially common with modern compact and ultra-compact digital cameras.
Ghost Hunters features the activities of a Warwick, Rhode Island ghost hunting group called The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS). Since 2004, the program has garnered some of the highest ratings of any Syfy network programming, presenting a mix of paranormal investigation and interpersonal drama. It has since been syndicated on NBCUniversal sister cable channel Oxygen and also airs on the Canadian cable network, OLN. In addition to their television venture, TAPS hosts a three-hour weekly radio show called Beyond Reality, operates a website where they share their stories, photographs, and ghost hunting videos with members. TAPS cast members also appear at lectures, conferences and public events.
Ghost Adventures premiered in 2008 on the Travel Channel. The TV series features ghost hunters Zak Bagans, Nick Groff (seasons 1–10), Aaron Goodwin, Billy Tolley, and Jay Wasley as they investigate reportedly haunted locations hoping to collect visual or auditory evidence of paranormal activity.
Many of us have weird sensations about seeing shadows or shapes out of the corner of our eye, only for them to disappear when we turn to look. And while you may be one of those people who is not afraid of such a paranormal experience, did you ever stop and wonder just what kind of ghostly apparition you encountered? Maybe, like most folks, you didn’t even consider that there could be different kinds of ghosts out there. But the fact is, experts in the field have put together a list and definitions of the types of supernatural phenomena that exist and it may come in handy.
The most common of all ghosts spotted is usually of a deceased person, someone you know, a family member or perhaps even a historical figure. These ghosts can be friendly or not – but often show themselves to others in a variety of ways. They can become visible; they can speak or make noises, touch you or even emit an odor like perfume or cigar smoke, etc, to let you know they are there. Experts say that this type of ghost retains its former personality of when they were alive and can feel emotions. And often, they are visiting you to comfort you or let you know something important. So if you happen to see a lost loved one, chances are they are there because they feel you want or need to see them.
Ever seen a mist or fog that almost looks like it’s swirling? If so, you may be witnessing what paranormal investigators deem as an ecto-mist or ghostly mist. This vaporous cloud usually appears several feet off the ground and can move swiftly or simply stay still – almost likes it’s orbiting. These ghostly encounters have been captured on many videos and in photographs and can be white, gray or even black. Although they can simply appear this way, linger then move away quickly, sometimes ectoplasms appear before becoming a full-bodied apparition. Many people have witnessed them outdoors, in graveyards, battlefields and historical sites.
Perhaps one of the most popular terms most of us have heard when it comes to ghosts, the word poltergeist actually means “noisy ghost” because it is said to have the ability to move or knock things over, make noise and manipulate the physical environment. While many of us had heard the term before, a poltergeist is actually one of the rarest forms of hauntings and to many, the most terrifying. Loud knocking sounds, lights turning on and off, doors slamming, even fires breaking out mysteriously have all been attributed to this type of a spiritual disturbance. Another frightening aspect of the poltergeist is that the event usually starts out slowly and mildly, then begins to intensify. And while many times poltergeist activity is harmless and ends quickly, they have been known to actually become dangerous. Some experts explain it as a mass form of energy that a living person is controlling unknowingly. Whatever the case may be, poltergeists have caught the attention of paranormal enthusiasts and experts, scientists and many others who are just plain curious.
Orbs are probably the most photographed type of anomaly. They appear as a transparent or translucent ball of light that is hovering over the ground. Many ghost hunters and guests on Ghosts & Gravestones are surprised to see them in their photos. It is believed that orbs are the soul of a human or even an animal that has died and is traveling around from one place to another. The circular shape they take on makes it easier for them to move around and is often the first state they appear in before they become a full-bodied apparition. If you’re lucky enough to capture an orb on video, you’ll be amazed by how fast they can move. In photographs they are usually white but can be blue as well.
Most often spotted in homes or old historical buildings, the funnel ghost or vortex is frequently associated with a cold spot. They usually take on the shape of a swirling funnel and most paranormal experts believe they are a loved one returning for a visit or even a former resident of the home. Appearing as a wisp of light or a swirling spiral of light, they are often caught in photographs or on video.
What to do if you see or hear a ghost?
What to Do If You See or Hear a Ghost Don't Freak Out. As much as many of us think we know how we'd react if we saw a genuine apparition, we don't really know until it happens to us. Try to Communicate. Yes, you might be able to communicate with the spirit, if this is an intelligent haunting. ... Take Pictures. ... Record Some Audio. ... Call Others In. ... Wait It Out. ... Document It. ... Return. ...
What is the difference between ghosts and apparitions?
Apparition is a synonym of ghost. As nouns the difference between apparition and ghost is that apparition is an act of becoming visible; appearance; visibility while ghost is (rare) the spirit; the soul of man.
What is the difference between a ghost and a spirit?
As nouns the difference between ghost and spirit is that ghost is (rare) the spirit; the soul of man while spirit is the undying essence of a human the soul. is that ghost is (obsolete|transitive) to haunt; to appear to in the form of an apparition while spirit is to carry off, especially in haste, secrecy, or mystery.
The number of different types of ghosts and spirits and the ways they can attempt to make contact with the living may surprise you. Most people think that there are only one or two different types. We’ve put together a list of the most common types that people encounter.
Possibly the most well-known type of apparition, orbs are those tiny balls of light/energy (most often seen as white or blue) that appear mostly when developing photographs. Although many orbs can be disproven as just tricks of the light or flaws on the film, genuine orbs do exist and have been documented for as long as the camera has been around. Orbs are said to be a soul (normally either from a human or an animal) that is traveling in the shape of a circle, as it is the easiest way for them to get around. Orbs that have been present in the physical world for a long enough amount of time are more likely to be able to successfully perform full-body apparition.
There are also common theories about the meaning of the color of an orb. For instance, a clear orb may indicate that the spirit wants to communicate with you, or that they are specifically attached to the area they are seen in. White or silver orbs are generally seen as very positive and protective in nature, while brown or black orbs indicate a negative presence or an unsafe area. Blue orbs are usually a spirit who seeks to be a guide, while grey may mean the spirit is depressed or confused.
One of the most obvious ways that ghosts and spirits reach us is through interaction. This can happen in a variety of different ways, and can really vary depending on the type of ghost. Examples of interaction from ghosts and spirits include brief physical touch, scents like perfumes or cigar smoke, and even actual apparitions (where they are able to be seen by the living). Interactive ghosts are the most common type of ghost in the world. They are said to be able to maintain much of their personality from when they were alive.
In nearly all cases, the interactive spirit is haunting for a reason. They are ghosts of people who have been close to you, and they have returned to either provide you with closure to their death or to pass on information that they believe it is important for you to have. The best way to stop this type of haunting is by simply listening to what they have to say, and allowing them to feel like they have achieved what they needed to achieve before passing on to the other side. That’s why these types of hauntings are also frequently known as intelligent hauntings.
The word “poltergeist” originates from a German word, which roughly translates as “noisy ghost.” This type of ghost is one of the most frequently represented in movies, like the 1982 American classic that bears the same name. They were given the name due to their ability to interact with the physical human environment, which often comes in the form of moving objects around. Poltergeists commonly open and shut windows, doors, and cabinets, push books off bookshelves, turn lights off and on, and even start fires.
With poltergeist activity, signs of a haunting usually start off small, which means that many people tend to initially write them off as simple coincidence. Ultimately, the haunting ramps up until it is impossible to ignore. In almost all cases of poltergeist hauntings, the ghost must be forced to leave and won’t simply choose to stop on its own. However, there are some schools of thought that suggest that sometimes what is thought to be a poltergeist can actually be a manifestation of traumatic energy. This can come either from the memory of an event that happened in the home itself or from someone in the home who may not even know they are causing it (known as psychokinesis). Before deciding you have a poltergeist, that factor may be worth considering.
Demons are another well-known but often misunderstood type of spirit. They are so powerful that they can take possession of human bodies, inflict both physical and mental torture on those unlucky to run across them, and even attach themselves to a physical object. They are also able to change their own shapes, but most people commonly report seeing them as simple, hulking black masses that stand in the doorway. It is incredibly important for anyone who suspects a demon haunting to contact a professional, as they are capable of seriously injuring or even killing people. People who have reported being haunted by a demon often state they frequently smelled sulfur or rotting eggs in their homes with no apparent cause.
A subset of the demon category is the crowd demon, who are specifically attracted to large groups of people and crowds due to the energy that they provide. They are most commonly recognized as being distorted shapes in photographs and are generally not noticed until after the fact. They also generally come in groups of at least two or more.
While not a ghost, strictly speaking, humans that are possessed by demons can be just as frightening to encounter. Spirits that are able to successfully gain control of a human being are infinitely more powerful than any other more traditional spirit. They are able to do everything that a poltergeist can do without the need to recharge, and can freely interact with the living without drawing attention to themselves.
If you suspect that you are interacting with a demon-possessed human, immediately seek professional help. In many cases, the demons are incredibly tricky and persuasive and may come across as completely genuine to anyone untrained. However, only an exorcism will help in these situations, and those must be performed only by trained professionals in the proper environment as they are extremely dangerous.
While the majority of the ghosts and spirits in this article are universal, each culture holds onto its own mythology as well when it comes to types of hauntings. For instance, in more traditional areas of Japan, there are said to be “wandering spirits” known as gaki and meun-botoke. The spirits are able to inhabit the bodies of recently deceased people who died while feeling extreme rage or jealousy, and the only way to stop or prevent this from happening is for a relative to place a knife or blade on the chest of the dead loved one. In Ireland, ghosts called Tash or Thevshi are spirits of people who died suddenly or are sometimes called away by fairies. And in the Jewish culture, there is a spirit called the dybbuk that is continually looking to possess a living human. Every area of the world has its own unique take on where ghosts come from and how to help them pass over.
Shadow people are the type of ghost or spirit that people tend to see from the corner of their eyes but are unable to see by just looking at them. In the unlikely event that you do come face to face with a shadow person, many people describe a simple black figure with an empty black hole where their face should be. They are generally quick to flee, either through walls or just simply into the darkness.
These spirits are often described as having masculine and oppressive energy and are seen as being very tall and humanesque. There are theories that their human shape allows them to better blend in with people, while other theories state that shadow people are actually extraterrestrials in disguise. Shadow people have also been blamed for being behind sleep paralysis, though they are normally viewed as being fairly neutral or benign.
Instead of having an actual ghost or spirit haunting your home, some areas are actually home to residual hauntings. With residual hauntings (very similar to signs that mimic a poltergeist haunting), a negative event that happens in the home and stays there psychically. This is often described as a home feeling just generally heavy or oppressive or with people reporting repetitive sounds like pianos playing the same few notes, boots walking down specific hallways, children’s laughter, etc. The difference between a residual haunting and a poltergeist is that, even if only for a few seconds, ghosts involved in these hauntings are visible. They also do not interact with the living so, if possible, it is recommended to just ignore them.
We saved the best for last. While animal ghosts aren’t often seen (more than just briefly out of the corner of the eye), they are usually felt and heard by their former owners during times of distress. Animal ghosts have been known to jump up on beds and settle into places they used to sleep, rub against legs, and make their trademark noises. Our former pets often leave a psychic impression on the place they knew the best and the people that loved them so you can be assured that your beloved cat or dog isn’t stuck in between worlds. Fido or Fluffy has moved on to a better place, but their comforting aura and desire to love and protect you lives on, even in the afterlife. However, if you do not have a pet, there are certain spirits (like the Black Dog) that are said to be physical warnings of impending doom!
There are nearly an infinite number of ghosts and spirits in the world, from the benign to the significantly more dangerous. Being able to recognize the specific type that you may be in contact with can help you decide what the next best step is, whether that is to call in a professional, ignore them, or just to attempt to reach out to get to know them better. If you think you may be experiencing a haunting, keep a record of the dates, times, and specifics of any strange phenomenon. This alone may be enough to help you decipher a pattern! Never go into any interaction with a ghost or a spirit unprepared. Be safe, and happy haunting!
Parapsychology is a field of study that investigates paranormal or “psychic" phenomena, including purported mental abilities such as telepathy and telekinesis. Parapsychologists aim to test the existence and explore the nature of experiences and abilities in the paranormal realm.
Parapsychology involves the study of a variety of proposed psychic phenomena by scientists and scholars, including the search for evidence of their existence. Among these phenomena are:
While parapsychological ideas have deep historical roots, Joseph Banks Rhine has been described as the founder of parapsychology as a scientific pursuit. In the 1930s, he and his colleagues at Duke University carried out studies of extrasensory perception using means such as card-guessing and dice-rolling to seek evidence.
Paranormal phenomena include events that cannot be explained according to current scientific understanding of the world. Such events seem to defy, for example, established facts about the workings of perception and physical motion.
A number of factors might help explain apparent encounters with ghosts or other unseen beings. They include physiological changes in the brain due to stress and an evolved tendency of human minds to “detect” intentional activity in ambiguous situations.
General equipment includes items that aren’t really related to ghost hunting but are still important. For example, a flashlight isn’t really only associated with ghost hunting, but it is still nice to have so you can see in dark places.
These are everyday items that aren’t very hard to get. Chances are, you can go to a store near you and find them all. Read below to find out the five things that are essential for ghost hunting.
Flashlight
You probably had an idea of what was going to be on this list before you started, but were you thinking about flashlights too?
This is probably the most essential item on this entire list! Don’t overlook bringing a flashlight just because you were only thinking about the most important pieces of specialized equipment.
If you are ghost hunting, obviously you need to see what you are doing. Sure, you want a totally dark room when trying to communicate with spirits, but a little bit of light will help you work with your equipment too.
Imagine trying to figure out how to work a Spirit Box when you can’t see any of the buttons. You can honestly just pick up any old flashlight to help you see what you are doing, but it’s better to get one that will hold up to possibly being dropped.
Walkie Talkie
If your ghost hunting adventures involve more than just yourself, walkie talkies are definitely a necessity! Imagine you and your partner have split up and are in different rooms.
You hear a loud thud and think it could be ghost activity. Just to be sure, you radio to your partner and it turns out they tripped.
If you didn’t have a walkie talkie, you would have just gone on assuming it was a ghost, possibly ruining the entire validity of your adventures.
Walkie talkies make it easier to debunk (or verify) what is going on. When searching for walkie talkies, make sure to look at long-range ones as well!
Some of your adventures may lead you to locations that cover a lot of ground. You definitely don’t want to find something amazing and not be able to alert anyone because your walkie talkies are out of range.
Pen and Paper
It’s great to have all the specialized ghost hunting equipment and tools, but sometimes, you just need to write stuff down.
If you detect an EVP, you definitely need a way to remember it. Some devices have built-in records to keep track of EVPs, but if you don’t have anything like that, it’s just as easy to write it down.
You can use any notebook, but my personal favorite is the Rite in the Rain waterproof journal. This is helpful for those outdoor adventures that have a bit of surprise rain.
Pick up this journal or visit a store to get a plain notebook and pens that are dedicated to writing down information while ghost hunting.
Phone
Chances are, you already have a smartphone, so we don’t need to know where to buy one. There’s even a chance you’re reading this article from your phone right now.
Even though your phone goes everywhere you do, it can be especially useful for ghost hunting.
The obvious reason is to be able to call others. If you experience any difficulties and have to call someone, you can use your phone.
It also doubles as a flashlight, a pen, and paper, and can be used to take pictures/record what’s going on. It’s great to have more than one camera to document what is happening.
If only one camera picks up an apparition, then there is a chance it may have been a glare or something the camera caused. If both cameras capture the apparition, then you have a much more solid case for capturing a ghost on camera.
Camera/recorder
It goes without saying that a camera is one of the most important things to bring on your adventures. If you want to playback anything that has happened, you need to record it.
Similarly, if you see something that looks out of place, you can take a picture of it.
Cameras don’t just allow you to recall things later, but they can also capture things that are invisible to the human eye.
There has been plenty of ghost hunting shows where the crew takes pictures, and then later realizes there is some sort of anomaly or apparition in the corner.
Remember to invest in a camera with night vision though! You want to be able to see what you are recording, so check out cameras like the one above that can record and take pictures with night vision.
Specialized equipment consists of the tools you need that are specific to ghost hunting and are essential.
You can use a digital audio recorder for other things besides ghost hunting, but your ghost hunting trip wouldn’t be the same without a piece of equipment to detect EVPs. That would defeat the purpose of your adventures!
Digital Audio Recorder
EVP stands for electronic voice phenomenon and is most commonly associated with voices from ghosts or other supernatural entities. It’s incredibly important that you capture any EVPs because they help you understand a location or certain individual.
Using a recorder is the best way to pick up any EVPs. During your adventures, you can keep it on to record any that is happening or conduct a session of asking questions to see if you get any answers.
It’s important to know that you might not be able to hear an EVP at first. You may ask a series of questions and not hear any responses, but that’s totally okay! Check the recorder afterward and you are more likely to pick up on any EVPs.
EMF stands for electric and magnetic fields. These are basically areas of energy that can be picked up with a special meter. EMFs can come from several different things, including lightning, x-rays, cell phones, and microwaves.
Many people believe that ghosts can manipulate these fields, so it is important to track them. When you are ghost hunting, you should always track these waves.
If your audio equipment doesn’t pick up any voices, there is still a chance that a ghost is there (they are just being a bit quiet!).
EMF meters are very simple to use as well. If the number is higher, there is more ’energy’ present. Nearby ghosts can either raise these numbers or cause them to fluctuate, not giving a clear reading.
Thermal Camera
Ghosts often cannot be seen just by looking around, but they give off a different temperature than their surroundings. This is where a thermal camera comes in handy.
With a thermal camera, you can scan an area looking for any temperature anomalies and begin to investigate further.
These special cameras are quite amazing. A typical heat-detecting device needs contact with whatever it is you want to measure, but thermal cameras can detect temperatures from a distance.
When you use this camera, be sure to know what is surrounding you already. You don’t want to think you’ve found a ghost, only to later realize part of your crew was standing in the distance.
Kinect Camera
The Kinect Camera was originally an accessory for the Xbox but was eventually discontinued because people weren’t really buying it. The concept of the camera was still put to use in other products though.
This camera basically tracks motion in the shape of a stick figure. For example, if you were recorded on one, it would detect your basic shape; arms legs, torso, and head. This means it also would track any anthropomorphic ghosts or spirits that are around you.
This is definitely an important piece of equipment for your ghost hunting adventures. This is another device that allows you to capture EVPs, but it doesn’t work like a typical audio recorder.
The Spirit box sweeps through AM/FM channels at a rate you can set yourself. The idea is ghosts would be able to manipulate and speak through these channels. The purpose of sweeping is to eliminate the possibility of interference from any nearby radios.
If an authentic EVP is picked up, it should cover more than one station, ruling out interference. These ghosts can speak over several channels, and they are trying to communicate with you.
Below is the Ovilus Ghost Box and the Paranormal Music Box. They aren’t really necessary for normal ghost hunting but are still pretty cool. Both can be seen in action in Ghost Hunters (TAPS) , Ghost Nation, and Ghost Adventures, so if you want to feel like a pro, check them out!
Ovilus Ghost Box
The Ovilus Ghost Box is an additional way to communicate with ghosts, but it doesn’t work like a spirit box or an audio recorder. Instead of having a ghost speak directly through the box, they have the ability to manipulate different phonemes to form words.
This is super helpful because sometimes it’s difficult to understand what an EVP is saying. With this, you’ll be able to understand what the word is, and it even pops up on the screen.
Paranormal Music Box
If you want additional equipment to supplement your adventures, look into buying a Paranormal Music Box. This piece of equipment as a motion sensor that sets off a music box when something is nearby.
Although normal motion sensors work just fine, this is great for ‘curious’ ghosts or even locations that have children.
If you are just beginning your ghost hunting this may be a bit impractical, but it will definitely make an awesome addition to your collection.

What is a paranormal investigation?Paranormal investigation is the examination of phenomena that cannot be explained by normal scientific examination. Generally, paranormal investigation deals with ghosts, ESP, psychic phenomena, etc.
What are paranormal studies?Paranormal describes subjects studied under parapsychology, which deals with psychic phenomena like telepathy, extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis, and post-mortem survival studies like reincarnation, ghosts, and hauntings.
How do I become a paranormal investigator?Start investigating. Go to a site where paranormal activity has been witnessed or recorded and have some fun. Use the techniques you learned from your books or class and perform your own investigation. The best way to become a paranormal investigator is through real life experience.
Do you hear strange creaking or rattling noises in your house late at night? Have you had paranormal experiences in the past? It might be time to get a few beginner ghost hunting tips under your belt. Next time you hear or see something mysterious, you’ll be prepared to investigate and document evidence of a ghostly guest.
Before you embark on your ghost hunting adventure, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. For a beginning ghost hunt, you’ll need a pen and paper to keep track of any paranormal observations, a camera, a flashlight with plenty of batteries and, if possible, a mobile phone for use in emergencies or to track time. You will also want to dress appropriately for your excursion by wearing comfortable shoes or bringing a jacket. More advanced ghost hunters can purchase higher quality materials, such as video cameras, audio recorders or digital laser thermometers, to locate sources of energy. Since this equipment can be pricey, beginners should test the waters with basic gear before investing lots of time and money.
Even if you’re investigating your own home, it’s a good idea to research a particular location’s haunted history. You can prepare yourself for potential challenges and learn more about the paranormal sightings in an area. For example, if sightings commonly occur in the evening, you’ll know to plan your ghost hunt around that time. You might even find a few pictures of orb backscatter in your research, where a camera’s flash picks up invisible spirits and auras.
Most paranormal interactions take place near battlefields, forts, cemeteries, schools and houses, so you’ll want to check out these locations in your area first.
Ghost hunts are not only much more fun with a group, but they’re also much safer. You never know what kind of ghouls you’ll encounter, so bringing a buddy or two is advised.
Take special precautions in secluded areas or at night since the terrain might be unfamiliar and your sight may be impaired in the dark.
Plus, if you spot some frightening phantoms, you’ll be able to prove you’re not crazy since all your friends will have seen them as well!
If you’re investigating property that isn’t your own, always ask permission. It’s often best to have the property owner give written consent to avoid any legal troubles due to trespassing. If a property owner doesn’t want you to ghost hunt in a particular area, there’s probably a good reason! To be on the safe side, don’t forget your personal ID if you need identification at any point during your adventure.
Safety during a ghost hunt is very important. If you’re well prepared and research the best ghost hunting locations beforehand, your exploration should be exciting and safe. In order to err on the side of caution, you may want to bring a first aid kit with at least bandages and antibiotic ointment to accompany your ghost hunting party. Safe and cautious ghost hunters won’t disturb any angry spirits and will have a more enjoyable adventure overall. After reading these tips, you are equipped to investigate the haunted happenings in your home or elsewhere.
Learning more about a site’s history and the people who lived there is a memorable experience for all ages.
Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures during your expedition to document paranormal sightings and remember your first ghost hunting adventure!
Soon
